ASC certification for farmed fish
Fish farming or aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in the food production. For aquaculture a sustainability standard has been developed, which judges fish farming on the intensity of sustainability: ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council).
The ASC-standard is oriented towards environment aspects, as well as social aspects.
The ASC-standard is the result of a consultation between a large number of parties involved in aquaculture, the so-called “aquaculture dialogues”. The initiative was taken by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Queens’ partner-supplier of pangasius and tilapia were closely involved in the “aquaculture dialogues” and the development of the ASC-standard. These companies have already progressed on their way to ASC-certification. More information about farmed fish from aquaculture.
In the build-up to the ASC-standard, Global GAP has already established international standards for food-safety and sustainability in 2009.The fish farms of our partner-suppliers have already been judged on Global GAP-standards since then. For the moment these criteria apply for the farming methods of salmon and shrimps. The Global GAP-certification is a strong basis for the certification according ASC-standards.
In the near future, Queens Products will follow the ASC-policy for its salmon- and shrimp suppliers, just like the MSC-policy which Queens Products already follows. We expect to offer ASC-certified farmed fish to the Dutch supermarkets in the middle of 2011. For more information about ASC, see www.ascworldwide.org.
